Job Description
The core purpose of the Headteacher is to provide professional leadership and management for the school. This will promote a secure foundation from which to achieve high standards in all areas of the school’s work.
To be successful our Headteacher will:
- Promote excellence, equality and high expectations for all pupils;
- Ensure that the school’s ethos and commitment to Roman Catholic values is evidenced in how we work and learn;
- Create a safe and productive learning environment which is engaging and fulfilling for all pupils;
- Ensure that our staff have the necessary skills and knowledge to promote equality and take pride in our diversity and promote the rights of children;
- Effectively lead and facilitate teaching and learning;
- Evaluate school performance and identify priorities for continuous improvement;
- Continue to develop the school’s vision and plans with governors to reflect national and local changes;
- Ensure delivery of agreed plans and demonstrate evidence of implementation of actions;
- Proactively communicate with governors on legislative changes and national trends;
- Recognise the role parents, carers and families play in helping children and encourage their involvement in all areas of school life;
- Be visible in our community and support school social and community cohesion events;
- Model the values and vision of the school;
- Be responsible for raising the quality of teaching and learning and for pupils ‘achievements within a successful learning culture;
- Give and receive effective feedback and act to improve personal performance;
- Actively and visibly communicate with the whole school community;
- Challenge other peoples’ views and manage conflict;
- Develop, empower and sustain individuals and teams;
- Collaborate and network with others within and beyond the school;
- Ensure that the school and the people and resources within it are organised and managed to provide an efficient, effective and safe learning environment. This includes adhering to safe employment procedures and working with the Governing Body to provide a safe environment for pupils, staff and members of the school community;
- Collect and use a rich set of data to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the school;
- Combine the outcomes of regular school self‐review with external evaluations in order to develop the school;
- Recognise, promote and celebrate the diversity of our school community;
- Work closely with our Parish Church and the Church community to develop and strengthen links and involvement in school life for the benefit of the children and their families;
- Proactively consult and act on community feedback;
- Particularly engage with hard to reach groups;
- Harness talent from the whole school community to achieve the school’s aims.
This job description is based on the National Standards for head teachers (DfES 2004) and the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge for the Children’s Workforce (DfES 2005). The Headteacher will carry out his or her professional duties in accordance with, and subject to, the National Conditions of Employment for Headteacher and Education and Employment legislation. The Headteacher is accountable to the Governors for the standards achieved and the conduct, Management and administration of the school, subject to any policies which the Department for Education and Skills and the Governors may make. The job description is subject to annual review.
This governing body and the local authority are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young persons and Headteacher must ensure that the highest priority is given to following guidance and regulations to safeguard children and young people. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.
